This is an evolving project inspired by the loss of my beloved Chihuahua rescue dog, Gerald.
After seven long weeks and losing over 30% of his body weight, Gerald’s battle with acute pancreatitis came to an end. He endured an immense amount of medical care from an endless team of veterinary professionals who tried to save his life.
Prior to his pancreatitis diagnosis, I was told I could reintroduce him to his regular food plan after he appeared to be on the road to recovery. Unfortunately, I was unaware at the time that the fresh pet food diet I ordered online — and believed was formulated specifically for his little body — contained more than double his recommended fat intake.
My awareness first began after reviewing the extensive records I created documenting all of Gerald’s food, medications, medical visits, and treatments. Those records painfully revealed a steep decline after about a week of returning to his fresh food diet.
After that discovery, I uncovered a shocking number of online consumer complaints and eventually found a class-action lawsuit filed against Gerald’s dog food company during his final weeks alive.
It takes only a simple internet search to discover this paper trail for yourself, but today I am here to share Gerald’s story with you and provide a place for you to share yours.
What is your truth about fresh dog food diets?
